BEYOND EXCHANGE

A new program designed to facilitate relationship-building at the grassroots level, Beyond Exchange engages individuals from the Jewish, African American and Latino/Hispanic communities in people-to-people exchanges in metro Detroit. Funded by the Jewish Fund, the Ravitz Foundation and the Edward C. Levy, Jr. Foundation, Beyond Exchange is a collaborative effort of the Jewish Community Relations Council (JCRC), the Michigan Region of the Anti-Defamation League (ADL), and the Michigan Roundtable for Diversity and Inclusion (MRDI).

Beyond Exchange brings together groups of people who share a common affinity, profession or age group (“cohorts”) from the Jewish community with their counterparts in the African American and Latino/Hispanic communities. Each cohort experiences a three-month series of custom-tailored programs that provide for extended, in-depth, frank conversations that explore such areas as group identity, difference and the negative consequences of segregation and racism. The process is designed to provide participants with understanding, knowledge, and skills to leverage their position as community influencers and make them diversity leaders and social change agents in regional Detroit.

A Beyond Exchange Advisory Panel meets regularly to identify emerging community issues and works to identify prospective cohorts and their leaders (“quarterbacks”).
