WHERE TO BEGIN

Elected officials pay attention to what their constituents say about issues of concern to them. Through this website and other resources and activities, Council can empower you to be an effective public policy advocate.

Here’s how to start:
• Get informed. Learn all you can about the issue of concern.  Develop
sound arguments to back up your positions.  Speak out and support
advocacy efforts aimed at positive change.
• Join a group or movement. Network and communicate. Like-minded
activists accomplish more when they work together, share their
  knowledge, and act in concert.
• Head a committee.  Become a leader.  Help others in transition.  Take
  initiative and get involved.
• Contact legislators. Learn the techniques that work best when
contacting public officials. Get to know your legislators. Relationships
matter.  Support candidates who support your cause.  Vote!
• Use the media as a means of getting your message out to the general
public and to public officials. Learn the techniques that work best when
  contacting the media.
