VOLUNTEER FOR THE DPS READING CORPS
The Detroit Public Schools (DPS) Reading Corps is seeking thousands of volunteers who are willing to give an hour a week to help young children develop reading skills. The Reading Corps has been launched on the heels of recent test scores that showed Detroit schoolchildren ranked the lowest in the nation of participants on the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) math test.
Volunteers are asked to commit at least one hour a week to tutor two students for a half hour each at schools during school hours. All volunteer tutors will have to attend a one-hour training session. DPS will make every effort to match volunteers with a school of their choice and to accommodate the volunteer’s scheduling needs. In most cases, a tutor’s schedule will be worked out at his/her school in consultation with the principal and the student’s teacher. Every volunteer must have a background check before he/she can begin to work in schools with children. Background checks, which require fingerprinting and a photo ID, will be provided at no charge to volunteers. The first training for JCRC's volunteer tutors took place on March 3rd. Future trainings will be scheduled as the demand warrants.
