ANTI-SEMITISM
Throughout history, Jews have faced prejudice and discrimination. In the 20th century, anti-Semitism manifested itself most horrendously in the Holocaust, when six million Jews as well as five million others were murdered. Since the start of the 21st century, anti-Semitic incidents – particularly in Europe – have increased in frequency, often focusing on or including anti-Israel and anti-American violence and hate speech.
The Jewish Community Relations Council provides quiet leadership in the face of such hatred. The Anti-Defamation League is our community’s lead agency on combating anti-Semitism, hate and bias. The work of Council complements the work of ADL through diplomacy, dialogue and collaboration. The Jewish Community Relations Council often partners with ADL on advocacy matters of shared concern, such as religious freedom and civil rights.
Council's bridge-building efforts and participation in coalitions with other religious and ethnic communities on issues of shared concern dispel misperceptions, challenge stereotypes, and establish relationships with groups who can be called upon to stand with us when anti-Semitism strikes.
Our Israel advocacy efforts often address the frequent linkages between anti-Israel rhetoric and anti-Semitism. We extol political and religious leaders to express their disagreements over the situation in the Middle East, however passionate, with appropriate behavior and in appropriate language.
