MITZVAH DAY 2012
On Friday, December 25, JCRC and the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Detroit held Mitzvah Day 2012, the annual single largest day of volunteering by Detroit’s Jewish community. Some 800 volunteers of all ages participated in dozens of social service projects throughout metro Detroit so that their Christian neighbors could celebrate Christmas at home with their families. Included among those, for the third year in a row, 100 volunteers from the area’s Muslim community also participated.

Many grandparents, parents and children volunteered together as families in the spirit of giving back to the community. Volunteer teams fanned out to 40 pre-assigned volunteer sites throughout metro Detroit. The volunteers donated a few hours of their time to participate in a variety of activities, including visits to older adults in nursing care facilities, preparing and serving holiday meals, and delivering toys and gifts to families in need. The event chairs for 2012 were Janet Berman, Micki Grossman and Hy Safran.
