Raise a Puppy for Guiding Eyes-- Segment on Sch'dy Today In & Around the Capital Region with Guest: Cheryl Lawyer (Volunteer Region Coordinator for Puppy Raising Program) and Mary Lynne "ML" Hansen (Region Manager -- employee/trainer) and "Boone" (Black Lab Puppy). Local volunteer puppy raisers, raise puppies to be guide dogs – from 8 weeks to 16 months – before returning them to guide dog school for formal training where they Teach basic skills, good manners, socialization and exposures and Attend puppy class for training twice a month. Raising a puppy for Guiding Eyes for the Blind is a real gift of love. A puppy is not born a guide dog, but created through the dedication and commitment of an entire team of individuals. The Puppy Raiser is the pivotal member of that team. Our network of puppy raisers includes a broad spectrum of caring individuals from various walks of life. They include couples, families with children, young adults and senior citizens. Some already have pets of their own. Raisers live in urban, suburban, and rural areas – and in apartments, town-homes, and single family homes. Sixty percent of our raisers are repeat raisers – meaning they have raised more than one Guiding Eyes puppy. We are extremely proud that so many raisers enjoy our program enough to renew their commitment to raise another puppy. A few have raised as many as 35 puppies! The relationship and bond between the raiser and pup will become the foundation for all the life lessons a guide dog needs to master. Raisers provide hours of patient teaching and numerous socialization journeys over a 12 to 16 month period, before they return a well-socialized young adult dog to Guiding Eyes training staff. All of the raiser's hard work culminates when a blind person receives their priceless gift – a guide dog providing independence, companionship, and mobility. Guiding Eyes is a 501(c) (3) nonprofit providing superbly bred and trained guide and service dogs that expand horizons for people to achieve life's goals. All services are offered free of charge to men and women who are blind or visually impaired and to families with children with autism. Guiding Eyes is dependent upon contributions to fulfill its mission. Our Headquarters and Training Center is located in Yorktown Heights, N.Y. and our Canine Development Center is in Patterson, N.Y. We are an accredited member of the International Guide Dog Federation (IGDF), the organization establishing worldwide standards for the breeding and training of guide dogs. Emotional Freedom Technique! Guest: Stephen O'Neal/ MSEd/ EFT Practitioner. EFT or Emotional Freedom Technique is a method that anyone can use to reduce stress, emotional and physical issues. EFT is simple, safe and has been found to be highly effective in helping individuals improve their lives. The concept of EFT stems from the Chinese culture where they have long since believed your body is like a ball of energy and your chi (energy) flows in a certain direction. If there is a blockage somewhere in your body, the energy flow is disturbed which produces an emotional disturbance as well. By tapping on acupressure points, you can remove the blockage and your chi or energy will flow again which will reduce or alleviate the emotional disturbance. EFT can be considered a "cousin" to acupuncture except you use your finger tips to activate the acupressure points instead of needles. As a practitioner, I have used EFT with men, women and children with outstanding results and continue to use EFT myself on a weekly basis.
